About

Portrait of Morgun Oh in his Berlin workshop

Morgun Oh is a Berlin-based Korean designer exploring material, craft, light, and time through objects, furniture, and spatial works.

His practice draws from Korean and Japanese craft traditions, natural materials, woodworking, and joinery. Rather than reproducing traditional forms, he draws on this knowledge to develop a contemporary and personal design language.

His work explores how materials can record traces of time, growth, stress, and human experience.

Emi Shinmura — Japanese Traditional Carpentry & Joinery
2 years of hands-on training

I trained under Emi Shinmura, a Japanese traditional carpenter and designer, for approximately two years.

Through this hands-on training, I learned to understand wood through making — studying its grain, structure, movement, resistance, and character, while developing practical knowledge of tools, construction, and joinery.

My practice is influenced by both Korean and Japanese joinery traditions. Rather than reproducing either tradition literally, I study their structural principles and reinterpret them through my own contemporary design practice.

I use and redesign joinery in different ways depending on the material, structure, and purpose of each work. The knowledge I gained through my training with Emi Shinmura continues to inform how I work with wood, furniture, objects, and lighting today.
